a ballerina toes the line between life and death
december 2016
In A Ballerina Toes the Line Between Life and Death, I blend vivid colors with images of morbidity. I took inspiration from the great surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. In particular, this piece was influenced by Destino, a short film created by Dalí in collaboration with Walt Disney. Every aspect of this painting points to the delicate balance between life and death. A lively ballerina dances amid a barren desert landscape. From her neck springs the branches of a leafless tree, on which two birds perch. A giant snake lurks below, waiting for the birds to fall. The ballerina produces a bouquet of flowers from her life-giving womb, some of which have begun to die among skulls and berries. She also lacks nipples, which sustain life. Mars and Venus watch as the sun sets on the fragile scene. This piece creates an image grounded in reality, but with many aspects of imagination.
